D&D PLAY FAQ

Dungeons & Dragons at MagicCon: Chicago features all-new adventure content from our partners Baldman Games and Level Eater Adventures! This is your chance to get a sneak peek at the new Legends of Greyhawk campaign and shape the future, play in the first Level Eater Adventures production set in the Forgotten Realms, and ride out the aftermath of a dragonstorm in a special D&D x MTG adventure set on Tarkir! Best of all, everything uses the new 2024 rules, and all adventures are great for players of all skill levels!

In addition, all paid games of D&D earn prize points you can redeem for cool stuff (see “Earn Prizes by Playing D&D!” below). Legends of Greyhawk games also award awesome treasure and opportunities for your character to advance levels that you can take with you to your next Legends of Greyhawk games later this year!

The special adventure “Battle of Emeridy Meadows” is set 7 years before the start of the Legends of Greyhawk campaign and serves as a flashback to a pivotal event in Greyhawk’s history. However the campaign’s future is mutable, and the characters that participate at MagicCon: Chicago will influence the shape the campaign takes going forward, altering the future and making decisions that will reverberate in the first big story arcs beginning later this year!

You can create your character before the event (either prior to the show, or on-site at least a half an hour before your session) by heading to D&D Beyond and choosing the Character Builder to begin. You’ll then select “Standard” as the method, uncheck all boxes under “Sources” and “Partnered Content” and follow the steps to create a 2024 rules character! You can also create a character using a 2024 Player’s Handbook, following all the rules presented there.

Note that Legends of Greyhawk starts at 1st level, does not allow evil characters, and you must choose either the “Standard Array” or “Point Cost” methods to generate your ability scores.

We love new players at MagicCon: Chicago and have a great path for you to experience D&D without the stress of being thrown in at the deep end. Start your journey with a free Learn to Play session, where you’ll learn the basics and all about D&D Beyond, the best tool to help you get playing right away. Then, you can take a dive into our on-demand play sessions of “Stormbreak: A Tarkir Adventure” that run less than 2 hours and feature premade characters set in the Magic: The Gathering plane of Tarkir. If you want to go further, make a 1st-level character using only the 2024 Player’s Handbook or 2024 Free Rules and jump into a session of Legends of Greyhawk – everyone else will be starting fresh too!

The following materials are recommended to bring to the show (or you can obtain them on-site): pencil or pen, a notepad or something to take notes on, a set of polyhedral dice, and for Legends of Greyahawk - a 2024 Player’s Handbook. You can pick the book up at the marketplace on D&D Beyond if you don’t have one already or get one on-site from the D&D store outside of the D&D play area on the 2nd floor.

We have a place for you to pick up a quick D&D adventure, grab some characters, and have fun all on your own in the D&D Free Play area! Located near the Command Zone on Level 2, the D&D Free Play area is the place to just have fun with some short play adventure content from the on-site library. Check it out!

D&D play is happening all over the show, including the following areas:

  • Legends of Greyhawk ticketed play – Room E253, Level 2
  • Level 20 VIP play and Level Eater Adventures special event – Room E451, Level 4
  • D&D Free Play – near Command Zone, Level 2
  • D&D Learn to Play – near Official Store, Level 3
  • D&D x MTG play – Room E252, Level 2
